As technology continues to shape the landscape of education, innovative platforms like Newsela are emerging to bridge the gap between traditional textbooks and digital learning.
Newsela is an easy way to differentiate in your classroom and to put control of learning in the hands of your students.
In this blog post, we'll explore the remarkable impact of Newsela on classroom learning and its role in shaping the future of education.
The Power of Customization: Catering to Diverse Learning Styles
Every student is unique, with their own learning pace and preferences. Newsela recognizes this diversity and offers a solution that caters to various learning styles. This isn't an empty claim - Newsela is research-based!
The platform curates a vast collection of news articles and nonfiction texts from reputable sources, all written at different reading levels. This allows you to differentiate instruction effectively, ensuring that each student is challenged without feeling overwhelmed. By offering content that matches their reading abilities, Newsela helps build students' confidence and encourages them to engage with complex texts.
Students are able to adjust the reading level of the article with a click of a button. Everything on Newsela is organized by Lexile Level. I've found that students don't always understand Lexile levels, so I usually give them a level to start at and let them adjust up or down. If a student has an IEP or 504 accommodation requiring differentiation, I tell that student to start on an appropriate level. I don't take away the choice to move to something more challenging, but I start them where they likely need to be.
Teach Elementary? When setting up your courses in Newsela, you can restrict the content with the elementary filter to help keep articles age appropriate. It also means that students will only see articles targeted to their age group when they search on NewsELA.
Current and Relevant Content: Fostering Real-World Connections
Traditional textbooks often become outdated quickly, leaving educators struggling to provide relevant material. Newsela addresses this issue by providing up-to-date news articles and texts that reflect real-world events and issues. This not only keeps the content fresh and engaging but also helps students make connections between their learning and current events. Students can explore real-world applications of their lessons, fostering critical thinking skills and encouraging them to become informed global citizens.
It is worth noting that Newsela specializes in non-fiction articles. For a fiction-based counterpart, check out CommonLit.
Promoting Critical Thinking: Analyzing and Evaluating Information
In an age of information overload, teaching students to critically analyze and evaluate sources is paramount. Newsela's content isn't just about reading—it's about thinking. Each article is accompanied by comprehension quizzes and writing prompts that challenge students to engage deeply with the material. By encouraging students to question, evaluate evidence, and form their own opinions, Newsela cultivates essential critical thinking skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Each article has multiple choice questions and a free response question. Full disclosure - I rarely use the free response questions because I would rather make one more specifically tied to the content or something else they are doing in class.
The multiple-choice questions are standards aligned, which is great! The downside is that the questions do change with the reading level of the passage - so students may not be exposed to questions that are written on grade level. I don't consider that a deal breaker, but it does mean that I don't want to give too many Newsela quizzes without peppering in some of my own so they are still exposed to "on-grade level" question stems.
Accessibility and Inclusivity: Breaking Down Learning Barriers
One of Newsela's standout features is its commitment to inclusivity. The platform supports diverse learners, including English language learners (ELL) and students with learning disabilities.
Differentiation can be time-consuming when students have dramatically different reading levels. Newsela helps you work smarter and more efficiently!
Not all articles are available in Spanish, but sometimes it was a great way for newcomer students to be able to access the content and still be able to participate in class activities.
By offering content at various reading levels, Newsela ensures that all students can access and engage with the same core concepts. This inclusivity not only supports academic growth but also fosters a classroom environment that values and celebrates diversity.
Empowering Educators: Tools for Effective Teaching
Newsela isn't just a platform for students; it's a valuable resource for educators as well. The platform provides teachers with robust tools to track student progress, assess comprehension, and monitor reading growth. These insights enable teachers to tailor their instruction to meet individual student needs effectively. Moreover, Newsela offers curated collections, lesson plans, and teaching strategies that save educators time and inspire innovative teaching methods.
Looking Ahead: Newsela and the Future of Education
Newsela's success highlights the evolving nature of education in the digital age. By leveraging technology to provide dynamic and current content, Newsela is paving the way for a more interactive and student-centered learning experience. As educators continue to adapt their teaching methods, platforms like Newsela will play a crucial role in meeting the demands of 21st-century education.
Newsela is a transformative force in modern education. Its ability to offer tailored content, promote critical thinking, and foster inclusivity positions it as a catalyst for positive change in classrooms around the world. By embracing innovation and adapting to the evolving needs of students and educators, Newsela is shaping the future of learning, one article at a time.
